LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT)- At least 70 Wisconsinites have been diagnosed with monkeypox.
That’s according to the latest update from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.
Since May 2022, monkeypox has been spreading from person to person in countries where the virus is usually not found– including the United States.
The monkeypox virus is from the same family of viruses as the smallpox virus. If you received the smallpox vaccine, the experts at Mayo Clinic Health System say you already have some protection. “There is a possibility that the childhood vaccine for smallpox will provide cross immunity protection for monkeypox. But we don’t know how much,” explains Dr. Raj Palraj.
Symptoms of monkeypox include an unexplained rash that develops into hard, round, fluid, or pus-filled skin lesions.
