Since its outbreak earlier this summer, the monkeypox virus remains active in the country.
The first case of the virus in 2022 in the United States was reported in Massachusetts in May. According to the state’s department of health, a man returning from Canada was infected with the virus.
Within a month, cases spread to California, hitting counties such as Sacramento and Los Angeles. On Aug. 1, Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a state of emergency, in response to the monkeypox spread, hastening efforts to curb the virus with vaccinations, testing and awareness.
As of Sept. 23, California has 4,753 total cases.
Overall, cases in the U.S. are slowly going on a downward slope since May, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. With our interactive map, you can see how California cases compare to the rest of the country.
