The cases of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) in cattle is increasing day-by-day in Nagpur district. A total of 1,410 cattle got infected and 33 have died due to LSD in the district in last two months.
LSD is showing Covid-like symptoms in bovine with animals also dying of respiratory distress. Earlier, LSD’s impact was limited to the cattle’s skin but it is now showing respiratory syndrome among cattle.
Veterinarians have stressed that milk of infected cattle is safe and it should be boiled above 100 degrees Celsius for safety.
In the beginning, the epicentre of the disease was just in Hingna and Saoner tehsils but in just two months it spread over 70 villages of the district. Whereas, 109 villages got affected with this disease. Among 33 deaths, 20 cases got the compensation from the administration so far and remaining will get it soon.
The only solution is early reporting of cases so that prompt treatment can help in preventing the spread. However, vaccination should be done as soon as symptoms appear, informed sources. People should not panic of this disease because it is 100% curable.
As per the sources, there are total 4,18,548 bovines in the district in which 3,26,432 are already vaccinated. The district administration has total stock of 4,15,000 vaccines for this disease. Veterinarians involved in Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) management said pneumonia has become one of the causes of cattle deaths.
With deaths also happening in animals that have been cured, the State Government has advised farmers not to engage the cattle in works like drawing carts or ploughing till 15 days after full recovery. There is no antidote after the lungs are affected, say veterinarians. The administration is also keeping an eye on the stray animals and animals in the Gaushalas in the district and vaccination has been started in many places.
